JUST LOOK AT THE EXPRESSION OF HER FACE
YouTube shout-outs to celebrities by Marines have become a popular way to attempt to get a famous date for the next Marine Corps ball.
But the latest celeb shout-out is much different.
Sgt. Wade “Willy” Wilson was killed in action May 11 in Helmand province, Afghanistan. Wilson was a 22-year-old anti-tank missileman assigned to Camp Pendleton’s 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines. He was on his second deployment to Afghanistan — and was apparently a huge Taylor Swift fan.
His friend and fellow-Marine, Spencer Walker, posted a message to Swift and her fans in the forum section of her website, Taylor Connect. The post includes a link to a YouTube video. In the video titled “A Fallen War Hero’s Love for Taylor Swift,” Walker tells the singer how much his friend loved her.
“Anybody that knew Willy personally knew that he worshipped you,”Walker tells Swift in his video. “He even slept with a poster of you in between our beds in Afghanistan on his first deployment there.”
Walker said Wilson was his best friend, and he wrote in his post in Swift’s forum that Wilson’s mom found out about her son’s death on Mother’s Day. The request in Walker’s video message to Swift is very simple — just think about his friend.
Taylor Swift Reaches Out to Family of Fallen Marine
In response to a Marine’s request, artist Taylor Swift made a personal phone call and sent flowers to the family of Sgt. Wade Wilson. Wilson, a native of Leona passed away overseas during combat in Afghanistan on May 11, 2012.
Taylor Swift reportedly told the family that she wants to wear Sgt. Wilson’s dog tags in her next video to show her support for his military service. Swift is currently shooting a music video in California.
STORY FROM THURSDAY, MAY 17, 2012:
“I was with Wade his first deployment to Afghanistan,” said Corporal Josh Marreel, who is making sure his friend and fellow marine won’t be forgotten.
“A lot of guys are flying in and driving from pretty much anywhere. We’ve got guys from North Carolina driving over,” said Cpl. Marreel.
Marreel and others are using social media to spread the word about Sgt. Wilson’s death. While his friends were trying to come up with a good way to honor Wilson they remembered his love for a certain country music star.”
From Youtube video: “This is a shout out to the one and only Taylor Swift. I know you have no idea who I am but this video isn’t about me. This is about good buddy, Sgt. Wade D. Wilson, who was killed in action Friday, May 11, 2012 in Afghanistan. Anybody that knew Willy knew that he worshiped you. He even slept with a post of you in between our beds in Afghanistan.”
Marrell and other marines even made a video on Youtube inviting Taylor Swift to Sgt. Wilson’s funeral because he was such a huge fan of Swift.
“A big thing would be a video response or even just a letter to his parents saying you know how she supported what he did,” said Marreel.
“Fans are my favorite thing in the world. I’ve never been the type of artist who has that line drawn between their friends and their fans. The line’s always been really blurred for me. I’ll hang out with them after the show. I’ll hang out with them before the show. If I see them in the mall, I’ll stand there and talk to them for 10 minutes. I don’t care. I’m just a senior in high school who has a better job. Who am I to think I’m better than talking to people?”
HAPPY ANNIVERSARY - SHOULD’VE SAID NO
“Just being a human being, I’ve realized that before every big problem you create for yourself, before every huge mess you have to clean up, there was a crucial moment where you could’ve just said no. This is a song I wrote about a guy who never should have cheated on me.” - Taylor Swift on the Song
